Unlock the Language of Art: Essential Terms Explained

Welcome to the 'Art Terms Explained' section of Sketch Works.online! Here, we delve into the essential vocabulary that underlies the rich world of art. By familiarizing yourself with these terms, you’ll not only deepen your understanding and appreciation of different artistic styles and techniques, but you'll also enhance your ability to discuss art with others.

Composite Sketch

Understanding this Term

At Sketchworks.online, the term "composite"  or "Composite sketch" refers to a drawing or sketch of a totally fictitious character. Fictitious as in, faces that are created from the artists imagination. Most Anime or cartoon characters are fictitious face characters created by an artist using their own imagination to create a face.

The difference between what Anime and cartoon artists do, and what we do is that, our work is hand-created and hand-drawn. While their work is often digitally created using AI and other digital art tools.

Hand-Sketching:

The Distinction of Organic Art

Today, many brilliantly sketched art projects are actually produced on a computer with the assistance of AI or other sophisticated digital tools.

Conversely, the term "hand-sketched" as it is used on this website, is referring to sketches that were created by hand only; without the aid of AI, and other digital art tools.

We make this distinction so  people who have an interest in how sketches on this website were made can have a better understanding and appreciation for hand-sketched artwork that was not digitally created.

That being said, digital, graphic art is becoming more popular. One reason is because it can be produced much faster, (and perhaps more precisely) than hand-sketched art projects.

Whether the sketch was created digitally, or by hand, the goal is to draw something amazing on paper. And if an artist can achieve that, then that's all that matters.

Realism: Sketching the Essence

of the Subject

There are a few sketches on this website that feature more realistic images of a subject. These sketches, which require more focus, and more attention to details--have taken more time and energy to produce.

Many very skilled artists are able to create a much higher level of detail and realism than the artwork on this website.

However, no matter how much attention to detail was applied, if the effort to draw a subject results in a picture which effectively conveys the essence, and the image of that person, you succeeded.

In fact, if you are an aspiring artist, drawing a picture to your best abilities might be a better goal to reach for, than trying to create a level of realism with every picture.

To get to any level of realism takes time and patience. If you are an artist, and realism is your goal, keep trying. Eventually, you'll get there.
